INTERVIEW / ALBUM RELEASE // BINARY FINARY // THE LOST TRACKS

Binary Finary, respect to Matt Laws and Stuart Matheson that survived and overpowered an 8 year internal power struggle, only to come out the other end, stronger, better and more sublime than ever! Known for their amazing trance-pleasure-zones, we are excited to ask them a little more about the past, present and future. For more information about their long awaited album 'The Lost Tracks', visit www.binary-finary.com .

You talk about internal power struggles that have caused delays, described as an 8 year sabbatical actually... how do such lessons of life and business influence your music today?

I think the most important thing we have both learned during this whole experience is that if you write music to satisfy yourself and you enjoy making it, then everything else that comes is an added bonus… We don't write music for any other reason, only that we enjoy what we are doing and like listening to music we have created…

The UK isn't exactly leading in Trance, what is the X-Factor of Binary Finary's trancy sound? Are you expecting to convert Britains party minds?

No, we are shortly to start producing as a boy band with an acid sonic twist! lol… only joking…

We haven't undertaken this project to change anyone's minds… hopefully a few people who loved the scene will like our album, and possibly some people who are new to this sound will pick up on it…

We'd love to take our sound out to club land in the UK, but promoters seem lesser and lesser likely to take a risk on a night and what nightclubs there are seem to be getting busted for drugs or shut down due to lack of funds…

We are planning on our own night in the late summer, fingers crossed it all goes to plan…

Name your top 3 influences/ inspiration.

Ozric Tentacles, The Orb, AND Eat Static.

Inspiration comes from many different places… Mostly it's from the actual track we are creating… You start off with something that sounds crap and then you tweak something and you can hear and feel the potential… that part of writing is incredible…

What is the next level for Binary Finary?

We are working on a more progressive sounding project and we are hoping to release this as an album towards the end of this year, possibly with an ep release late summer…

We are also writing chill out material (just for fun) and this might see a release as well…

The album 'The Lost Tracks' is offered on a wide-range of internet sites, do you believe that the net is the next music medium -or is it the easiest way to get your name and album (tracks) out there? Is it still important to get your favourite productions into the hands of major names, labels or distributors as well?

Wow, what a question! I love the idea that as artists we are in control of our releases… I also love what the internet has brought, it has changed the need for the labels so they now need to fight harder to provide a better service to artists…

I think we are at the start of the internet as a music distribution service and I can only see this getting bigger and better…

At the end of the day the people who benefit are the consumers… They don't have to pay for packaging costs, distribution costs and label mangers Mercedes sports cars!! They also have much more selection… I love the idea that a person can create a track in their bedroom or at college and then within a few hours be selling it on the web… Fantastic…

Don't get me wrong, we are not totally against labels, but at the moment the route we have chosen suits us better…

What is the 'thing' you take forward from the internal power struggle?

Matt can melt a tin can from 10 paces using only his thoughts and a fish cake!

Seriously, it made both of us realise that trust is the most important factor in developing a working relationship within music… Music is an emotionally personal creation, and to have trust in your music partner is a must…

What is the 'thing' that still bugs you when realising that an 8 year sabbatical is a very long sabbatical.

I didn't get a good enough sun tan!!!!!!

It's best to look forward rather than look back… Everything happens for a reason and although its been a rocky road for Binary Finary, its still alive and we are still doing what we love doing, writing music!

Take us into your master-minds, can you tell us who does what in Binary Finary... are you both producers, musicians, engineers...?

We both do everything… From making the tea to creating a screaming lead line...

We live away from each other so we use the internet to swap ideas back and forth… Usually we start off a track and then ping it across to the other person… We swap the track back and forth until we are happy with its development and progression… Then we decide how to enhance it and push it forward…

How did you manage to keep up with this fast moving industry the past 8 years... Does the album title 'the lost tracks' refer to a stack of tracks you both build up on the hard drive over the past years, and finally had a chance to bring to life?

Absolutely.. They were written by both Matt and myself during this 8 year period… We had a casual conversation about some tracks we had found, we were talking about what to do with them, and decided a little release might be in order… Originally we were going to do a 4 track ep, but as we started searching around we dug up 16! Some have been tinkered with slightly, some re-engineered and others have been left totally alone… We wanted the tracks to have that raw vibe about them…

How do you see your musical future... performances or producing... maybe both?

Hopefully both… We love travelling to new places… That's got to be the best perk of the industry we are in, getting to travel to a place where you would never think of going… It's an adventure…

We will never stop writing music... Ever!!!

What do you guys do on a Sunday morning?

That question really depends on the night before!! I t's either apologising to someone for making an idiot out of myself or trying to find where I left the car, or simply eating breakfast, drinking coffee and running through a few tracks to see where they need improving…

Favourite venue in the UK - and favourite venue abroad?

Used to love the ZAP club in Brighton … Small, intimate and always had such an awesome crowd of people in there…

Home nightclub in Sydney , just because it's in Sydney !!

How would you describe the album - and what is the best time
(location) to play it...?

An eclectic fusion of various styles and genre's…

Anytime, there are tracks that are laid back, tracks that are thumping (maybe play them when you're late for work!) and tracks that are anthemic for when you want to go out dancing till the small hours…

Can we expect to see you in Holland ?

We would love to come to Holland ! To I will say a big fat yes and a big fat ‘come and get us' to any promoters reading this… Is that too blatent?

Will you put PARTYVIBES.nl crew up for a night if we come hang out
with ya... you know we love clubbing....

How many of you are there? You're going to get me to say yes and then I'll find out 52 of you are coming over! Damn, I'm going to have to find a big house!

Thanks a lot for your time guys, and we wish you every success of course! It's always a personal pleasure to look back at days in the Brixton Academy , The Fridge and events like SmartieParty...

Respect and keep the good music coming.

A big shout out to the Dutch party scene from Binary Finary... all that is left for you, is to download the album and check it out!
